Ben Simmons for Rookie of the Year

By: Dever Law ‘18

“He’s been compared to Lebron and his basketball intelligence has been compared to Magic Johnson both all time greats in the sport of basketball,” said Nick McDermott, a senior of Ridley High School. Ben Simmons is easily in the top two of NBA rookies. His archenemy Donovan Mitchell, who plays for the Utah Jazz, is the only other rookie to contend with him, but stats show that Simmons is easily the better rookie.

“Haters say Mitchell should win because they say Simmons is not a rookie,” said McDermott.  Rules show that this is Ben Simmons’ first year playing for the NBA so that makes him a rookie.

Experts compare Simmons to Lebron James, a future Hall of Famer and arguably the best basketball player of all time.

The only negative of Simmons’ game is his shooting. During the Sixers 16 game win streak Simmons averaged a triple double. The only other person to do that is Oscar Robertson, an NBA Hall of Famer. Ben Simmons has had twelve triple doubles surpassing even Magic Johnson who had seven during his rookie year. Simmons is averaging 15.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 8.2 apg, and 1.7 spg.

Donovan Mitchell beat Simmons in scoring average with  20.5 point per game during the season.“It is insane that Simmons  is being compared to Lebron James” said Kyle Strazdus, a senior at Ridley High School .

“I think Ben Simmons is a beast and will eventually be one of the top players in the NBA, but now I rank him around the 20th best player right now,” said senior Adam McGrath. Simmons has the third best field goal percentage at the point guard position and second for  rookies for  most touches in basketball. He is a big reason why the Philadelphia 76ers are 52-30 and finished third in the Eastern Conference.

The reason why there is such a debate in this topic is because people think that Simmons is not a rookie. They say that this is his second year year in the NBA, since he did not play his first season because of a foot injury. Ben Simmons did not play a single game in his first season. Therefore, he should be counted as a rookie and be the NBA’s Rookie of the Year.
